IMPLIED IMPACT is a two-person exhibition by Mike Michalski and Sam Taylor examining violence through anticipation, repetition, humor, masculinity, and the unstable distance between image and consequence. Drawing from the absurd physics of Looney Tunes, the exhibition considers a world of falling anvils, oversized mallets, exploding dynamite, and elaborate traps that inevitably backfire. Bodies are flattened beneath impossible weights, stretched like rubber, blown apart, and folded into out-of-tune accordions. A cloud of smoke clears, a character shakes off the soot, and the chase begins again. No permanent damage. What bliss.
Yet the cartoon's promise of endless recovery becomes more complicated outside the screen.
Through explorations of contemporary masculinity, digital culture, desire, and industrial force, Michalski and Taylor examine the fragile boundary between humor and horror. Violence circulates as spectacle, repetition dulls its impact, and cruelty becomes entertainment. Masculinity emerges as both armor and performance, concealing vulnerability beneath exaggerated displays of strength, aggression, and resilience.
Together, the artists occupy the strange interval between threat and contact: the suspended anvil, the burning fuse, the split second before a character realizes the trap has already been sprung.
IMPLIED IMPACT is less interested in depicting the “Kaboom” itself than in examining its anticipation, residue, and the uneasy expectation that everything will return to normal.
The joke depends on knowing what happens next. The horror does too.
